Are Your Thoughts Holding You Back or Propelling You Forward?

Have you ever found yourself frozen at the edge of the dance floor, heart pounding, afraid to make a move because you might look silly? Or maybe you’re the one dancing freely, lost in the moment, not caring what anyone thinks. That split second says a lot about the stories we tell ourselves—and how they shape our lives.

This idea hit home for me while coaching a group of incredible women in Zermatt, Switzerland. For nine days, alongside another coach, I worked with women from all walks of life who came to connect, have fun, and ski. Many were learning for the first time, some were seasoned, and others hadn’t touched skis in years.

Yet, the biggest factor in their progress wasn’t physical ability. It was their mindset. The ones who saw themselves as capable learners, who leaned into the discomfort and allowed themselves to be beginners, made the most meaningful progress. Their outlook fueled them. Others, paralyzed by fear of failure or looking uncoordinated, held themselves back.

If you believe your abilities are fixed (“This is just who I am”), you’re operating from a fixed mindset. It creates a constant pressure to prove yourself. But if you believe that skills and abilities can be developed with effort and time, you have a growth mindset — one that opens the door to possibility, resilience, and progress.

Every moment becomes a choice. Do you say yes to the challenge? Or do you shy away because you think you might fail? Do you speak up confidently in a meeting or stay quiet to avoid making mistakes? These decisions, big and small, shape our experience of life.

Progress rarely comes from perfection. It comes from being willing to get it wrong—and learn from it. When you’re surrounded by people who are stronger in a skill than you, that’s not a reason to shrink. It’s an invitation to grow. The growth mindset says, “I can learn from them.” The fixed mindset says, “I’ll never measure up.”

Which one do you want driving your life?

As a leader—of a team, a family, or your own life—choosing growth is powerful. But even the most open-minded person can switch between fixed and growth mindsets depending on the situation. The key is awareness. Notice when you’re holding back. Ask why. Then make a choice that aligns with your band.

Your mindset has been shaped by years of experience and influenced by what others have told you. But it isn’t set in stone. The more mindful you are of the thoughts that drive your choices, the more power you have in reshaping your story.

You’ve already proven yourself in so many ways. Now it’s time to stop performing—and start evolving. Choose growth. Choose courage. And watch what opens up for you.
