Most leaders focus on what they do instead of how they show up and are experienced.
In a recent leadership session, we explored a question that sits at the core of personal brand and leadership presence: How do you want to be perceived?
It sounds simple. Though your answer becomes a filter for everything: how you lead, how you behave, how you communicate and how others experience you.
This is not about how you think you should be perceived. It’s about how you choose to be perceived.
That distinction matters more than most leaders realize.
What Perception Really Means
Your personal brand is not what you say about yourself; it’s what others say based on how they consistently experience you, especially under pressure.
Perception is shaped by:
- How you show up
- How you engage with others
- How consistent you are
You don’t build your brand reputation in the easy moments; you reveal it in difficult ones.
The Moment That Tests You
During that same session, a leader shared he wanted to be perceived as confident and calm. He then asked: “What do I do when a colleague makes me angry?”
It may feel like others cause your reaction, though you own your response. You will be triggered. That’s human. Leadership is about what you do next.
You may not control the situation, though you are accountable for how you show up in it. These moments are part of how perceptions are formed.
From Intention to Evidence
When leaders are clear on how they want to be perceived, they set the standard. That standard should be visible and consistent in your behavior.
Ask yourself:
If others described you as confident and calm today, what would they point to as evidence?
Because perception is built on observable behavior.
2-Minute Leadership Check
Have clarity in how you want to represent yourself and ensure everything after that aligns with how you want to be known.
Take a moment and reflect:
- What 3 words do I want people to use to describe me?
- What 3 words would they use today?
- Where is the gap?
Closing the gap is your leadership work. Focused on how you want to be known.
Stop Giving Away Your Power
We’ve all been there. A tense meeting. A dismissive comment. A frustrating exchange.
And just like that, we react.
Later, we may even justify it:
- “They pushed my buttons.”
- “Everyone else reacted that way.”
Here’s the reality: The moment you react, you hand over control. You stop leading yourself and start operating by someone else’s standard.
The Cost of Misalignment
When your behaviors don’t align with how you want to be perceived, there is a cost:
- Trust erodes
- Credibility weakens
- Influence declines
- Teams disengage
And as a leader, the impact doesn’t stop with you. There is a ripple effect.
Your behavior sets the tone for what others believe is acceptable.
Consistency Is What Builds Brand Reputation
One moment doesn’t define you; your patterns do.
There’s also a lag: You may change your behavior today, but others’ perceptions take time to catch up. That’s why consistency matters. Not occasionally. Not when it’s convenient. Always.
Three Anchors for Intentional Leadership Reputation
1. You are responsible for how you show up.
You may not control circumstances, though you always own your response.
2. Protect your standard.
Do not allow someone else’s behavior to change yours.
3. Choose consciously, especially under pressure.
The moments that test you are the moments that define you.
Final Thought
At any given moment, you are either reinforcing your desired brand as a leader or working against it. When you become intentional about how you show up, everything changes.
You move from reactive to deliberate. From inconsistent to trusted.
You stop playing a supporting role in someone else’s narrative and step fully into the leader you’ve chosen to be.
Reflection: How do you want to be perceived, and where might your behavior be telling a different story?
